14th International Colloquium on Late and Vulgar Latin (Latin vulgaire – latin tardif XIV)
Please note: the conference has been postponed again due to the continuing uncertainties related to the covid-19 pandemic and will take place from Monday, September 5th to Friday, September 9th, 2022.
The 14th International Colloquium on Late and Vulgar Latin (Latin vulgaire – latin tardif XIV) will be held at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University (Belgium) from Monday, September 5th to Friday, September 9th, 2022. It will be organized by the Latin section and the research group DiaLing at the Department of Linguistics, under the auspices of the Comité international pour l'étude du latin vulgaire et tardif (www.unibg.it/lvlt).
The colloquium will be held in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Latin. As per tradition, it will be devoted to all linguistic aspects of late, informal, non-standard and colloquial Latin (including the transition from Latin to Romance).

Lezing: Micaela Brembilla (Uppsala Universitet) - The new critical edition of Mustio's Gynaecia - prolegomena and problems
Show contentTijdens haar uitwisseling met onze afdeling in het voorjaar van 2024 zal doctoranda Micaela Brembilla van de Universiteit van Uppsala op 25 april een lezing geven voor de DiaLing onderzoeksgroep. Ze zal er spreken over de talige kant van haar onderzoek naar Mustio's Laatlatijnse vertaling van een Grieks werk over vrouwengeneeskunde (Gynaecia).
Abstract
The Gynaecia of Mustio, a medical treatise dated to the 6th century AD, counts only one critical edition to date; it has been published by Valentin Rose in 1882, the first scholar to have the possibility to read and study the three main witnesses of the manuscript tradition. This edition is clearly an essential starting point for the study of the text; however, the scholar edited a Latin that seems too classical for the time period and the genre of the Gynaecia, choosing, when needed, to follow the more recent and less vulgar of the manuscripts.
In this talk, I would like to explain the reasons behind the necessity of a new critical edition; we will then try to delineate a panoramic of the new language of the Gynaecia - a later and more vulgar Latin - focusing on its special lexicon and, finally, on the main problems and questions still in need of further research.

Ze zal er spreken over de historische achtergrond en de manuscripttraditie van Mustio's Laatlatijnse vertaling van een Grieks werk over vrouwengeneeskunde (Gynaecia).
Abstract
We do not have much information about Mustio, besides that he is the author of a Latin text of gynaecology called Gynaecia, an adaptation of the Γυναικεῖα of Soranus of Ephesus. Even about the text itself we have many questions, since we are not certain about either its structure, its language, or its relationship with the Greek model. What we do know, however, is that the Gynaecia, particularly some chapters, was read and used for centuries after its production, as a channel for past gynaecological knowledge through the Middle Ages to the present day.
In this talk, I will introduce Mustio and the Gynaecia, and present what we think was their context of production, from an historical, geographical and theoretical point of view. We will then take a look at the fortunes of the text in the centuries that followed, trying to understand the reasons behind its popularity and transmission.

Waterways and literary channels of the pre-modern world
Show contentThis workshop explores the various appearances and meanings of water in pre-modern literary cultures. What role did the geography of waterways play in the transregional movement of authors, texts, styles, and poetics? What commonalities and differences can we identify across pre-modern literary canons, including those in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and other vernaculars? How does water function as a literary motif and/or device in various traditions? Which (metaphorical) meanings are attached to it? And what light can our understanding of pre-modern human-nature relationships shine on modern-day ecological concerns?
The aim of this workshop is to explore these questions through a variety of disciplinary, literary and linguistic contexts and approaches. In doing so, it seeks to build on a growing body of scholarship that turns the critical lens onto water. We kindly invite people who are interested in this workshop, on the 4th and 5th of April at St-Peter’s Abbey.

UGent-UCL Latin Studies Workshop 2023: Claudian’s De Raptu Prosperinae
Show contentUGent-UCL Latin Studies Workshop 2023 : Claudian’s De Raptu Prosperinae
This workshop will bring together two Masters seminars on late antique Latin literature at UGent and UCLouvain, as well as the research teams of those seminar’s organisers, respectively, Marco Formisano (UGent) and Aaron Kachuck (UCL). The workshop will be held on Saturday 16 December 2023 at UGent. This workshop will feature presentations in English by students of the two seminars on Claudian’s De Raptu Prosperinae, with focuses on approaches at the centre of these respective courses, including ecocriticism, the relationship between cult and literature in late antiquity, and surface reading vs depth reading as applied to late antique literature, and, in particular, to the works of Claudian. Presentations will be geared to opening up collective discussion, with inter-university and inter-regional exchanges at the core of this workshop’s mission. Students will prepare presentations (based on coursework) in concertation with their respective course-leaders; preparing and delivering presentations in English, and discussing course material in English, will contribute to goals of internationalization and preparing students for future work in and out of the university involving 1) English-language contexts and partnerships, 2) work between the two language-communities of Belgium, and 3) application of course-material and skills in professional contexts. Doctoral students of Marco Formisano and Aaron Kachuck, as well as other doctoral students from the respective universities, will also take part as discussants, thus facilitating exchange on the both the levels of pedagogy and of research, and serving as a platform for furthering ties between the two universities and language communities, as well as serving as a pilot for such Ghent-UCL Latin studies Workshops in the future.

GIKS Roundtable: "The Latinist"
Show contentThe novel "The Latinist" by the American writer Mark Prins tells a story which, though fictional, could easily happen, so that it will speak in particularly direct ways to everyone familiar with the academic environment, especially classicists. In this GIKS roundtable we are going to touch upon different themes raised by the novel: abuse of power, sexual harassment, and receptions of Ovid. But the text also propagates an image of Latin literature and the discipline of Classics that deserve discussion.

Jullie kunnen ook eigen onderwerpen aandragen en uitzoeken of een promotor jullie zou kunnen begeleiden bij onderzoek over dit onderwerp.

Gastcollege "Vertaaltheorie-en praktijk"
Show contentIn het kader van het vak Vertaaltheorie- en praktijk wordt een gastcollege georganiseerd, waarin een expertpanel verwelkomd wordt om met de studenten in interactie te gaan. Twee vertalers - Patrick Lateur & Hero Hokwerda - en een vertaaltheoreticus - Brecht de Groote (tevens moderator) - zullen met de studenten praten over hun eigen vertaalpraktijk door onder andere de spanning te bevragen tussen het vertalen van antieke versus moderne literatuur.
Alle geïnteresseerden - inclusief studenten uit andere jaren - zijn van harte welkom om dit college bij te wonen, dat gevolgd wordt door een drankje ter plaatse.

Tijdens dit event zal ook het eerste volume uit de reeks, 'Epitomic Writing in Late Antiquity and Beyond: Forms of Unabridged Writing' , dat uitgegeven werd door Paolo Felice Sacchi & Marco Formisano, voorgesteld en kort besproken worden.
De lancering neemt de vorm aan van een interdisciplinaire workshop, waarbij vier onderzoekers vanuit hun eigen achtergrond zullen spreken over het onderwerp van 'epitomic writing'. Deze zijn de volgende:

Micro-credential De vergeten literatuur
Show contentIn het tweede semester van het academiejaar 2022-2023 vindt de microcredential "De vergeten literatuur" plaats, georganiseerd door de Humanities Academie van de Faculteit Letteren & Wijsbegeerte.
In een lessenreeks van 12 bijeenkomsten (donderdagen, 13.00 - 16.00) zal Prof. Dr. Wim Verbaal (Latijnse Letterkunde UGent) geïnteresseerden onderdompelen in Latijnse teksten en schrijvers, in de geschiedenis van de Latijnse literatuur en de manier waarop deze traditie functioneert binnen het geheel van de Europese literatuurgeschiedenis. Specifiek gaat de aandacht naar de Latijnse literatuur die geproduceerd werd in de 1500 jaar na de Oudheid.
Deze microcredential staat open voor iedereen die geboeid is door literatuurgeschiedenis, maar ook zeker voor leerkrachten secundair onderwijs, die kennis willen opdoen over de diachronie van het Latijn binnen de Europese geschiedenis (in relatie tot de nieuwe leerplannen).

Abstract: "Latin technical and scientific prose has been generally disregarded from stylistic studies. However, scientific and technical writings display specific features (from the lexicon to the pragmatics) that are worth investigating. In this talk, I will focus on the notion of formulaicity: while the role of formulae in literary works, such as the homeric poems, has been the object of several investigations, its presence at the core of scientific texts has received less attention. In the first part of the talk, I'll focus on how formulaicity has been defined and analyzed in previous studies of technical/scientific texts. Secondly, I'll suggest computational methods to support the identification of formulae in Latin scientific texts and their function."

Abstract
À la suite de mon article à la XIIIe édition du Colloque LVLT de Budapest, intitulé : Les consonnes aspirées dans les textes latins tardifs, nous nous sommes décidée de poursuivre la même démarche pour étudier la graphie de la lettre y dans les textes latins tardifs et romans.
Avant de commenter les données du corpus, nous énoncerons les classements phonologiques de la lettre y, en latin et dans les langues modernes. En latin, elle a été introduite au Ier siècle av. J.-Chr. pour marquer la semi-consonne dans les emprunts grecs ; elle restera toujours une lettre étrangère à l’alphabet latin. Nous présenterons aussi le statut de la lettre y dans les langues modernes en tant que lettre étymologique et historique qui sert à rappeler une certaine origine et à faire des distinctions phonologiques.
Nous commencerons par les textes latins tardifs, pour continuer avec ceux en ancien français. Chez Grégoire de Tours, on retrouve la lettre y dans des mots d’origine grecque ou hébraïque : martyr, gygas, Aegyptus/Aegyptius, Moyses, typus, Pylatus. On constate l’hésitation entre la graphie y et i dans plusieurs cas: tipus, Babilonia. Il en est de même chez Frédégaire : il y a beaucoup de mots grecs : olympiades, Apocalypsis, auxquels s’ajoutent des noms de peuples, de personnes ou de lieux : Cypri, Cythii, Aegyptii, Pamphyli, Hyerusalem. On constate la même hésitation entre y et i : olimpiades, Pamphilia, Babyllonia/Babillonia.
Du domaine de l’ancien français, nous avons choisi pour la présente recherche La Chanson de Roland, du XIe siècle et Comput de Philippe de Thaon, du XIIe siècle. Ils contiennent bien des mots à la lettre y, initiale ou médiane, tant des noms propres : Yvories (Chanson), que des noms communs : ydeles (idole), ymagenes (image), etc. (Chanson), martyrie (martyr), yvern/yvernal (hiver), etc. (Comput).
Nous nous proposons d’analyser ces mots du point de vue de leur origine et de leur fonctionnement linguistique.

Show contentOp zaterdag 26 juni organiseert de opleiding Taal- en Letterkunde een aantal rondleidingen op de Blandijnberg, het gebouw waar de meeste lessen in onze opleiding plaatsvinden. We voorzien rondleidingen per taal, van telkens een half uur.
De rondleiding is bedoeld om studiekiezers kennis te laten maken met de opleiding en het gebouw waar de meeste lessen plaatsvinden. Alle studiekiezers die eraan denken om de opleiding te volgen maar nog een aantal vragen hebben, alsook zij die al gekozen hebben voor onze opleiding maar graag de omgeving eens zouden zien waar ze les zullen krijgen, zijn welkom.
Jullie worden begeleid door een lesgever uit de betrokken taal. Hij/zij zal een korte uitleg geven en vragen beantwoorden over de opleiding Taal- en letterkunde en de taal in kwestie.. Verder lopen we even doorheen het gebouw, langs enkele iconische plekken van de Blandijn, en kunnen de studenten boeken en cursusmateriaal inkijken.

International workshop: The tale of two traditions. Roman culture and Ancient Greek narratives under the Principate.
Show contentThis workshop sets out to explore ways in which Greek narrative responds to Latin literature and culture at large. By studying cases of Latin interactions within ancient Greek narrative under the Principate, the conference seeks not only to improve our understanding of Greek-Latin overlaps in general, but also to find new ways of conceptualising this corpus in particular, by 1.discussing new methodological tools concerning reception; 2. situate Greek works in their intellectual, bilingual and multicultural environment; 3.account for the conspicuous absence of Rome from certain Greek productions under the Principate and investigate the notion of cultural identity.

Origins and Original Moments in Late Greek and Latin Literature II
Show contentLate antique texts regularly try to establish a direct link with the literature of the origins by obscuring and erasing the poetic tradition in between. Such yearning for finding a connection between the contemporary and the original moment has received little attention within current scholarship, but, in the view of the conference’s organizers, it is one of the most striking and distinctive characteristics of the textual language of late antique literature, both poetry and prose.

Replacing the concept of “Dark Ages” with “Late Antiquity” in the work of cultural historians was a huge step that has enabled an enormous amount of creative work on the period. Nevertheless, while now conceived in more positive and dynamic terms than before, in its parameters and even identity as a coherent episode in cultural history, Late Antiquity remains subject to debate. The terms of debate are often determined by the various disciplinary allegiances among the debaters. Students of material culture frequently view late antiquity differently from literary scholars, just as medievalists view it differently from classicists, Latinists from Hellenists, and so forth. This is not a bad thing, except when communication is frustrated overvaluing the basic assumptions and standards of inference that obtain in one field and to undervalue those of others.
This paper will solve none of these problems, except by articulating what a classical and literary Latinist’s perspective on Late Antiquity might reasonably be. There is spectrum of possibilities, not equally applicable to all kinds of literary production, but easily distinguishable from ideas emanating from other disciplinary perspectives. The main points will be (1) to support the idea that Late Antiquity is a distinct period in the history of Latin literature (with some consideration of whether the same is true of Greek literature), and (2) to offer provisional commentary on the apparently heterogeneity of this literature in comparison to the apparent homogeneity of Classical Latin literature.
